How do I find a rental?

They don’t call this place the Valley of the Sun for nothing. Year-round warm temperatures and proximity to some beloved destinations -- like the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, Kartchner Caverns, Route 66, and more -- place Phoenix at or near the center of the RV universe.

Greater Phoenix itself is a must-visit. In addition to 300 sunny days a year on average, Arizona’s sprawling capital offers unique museums, memorable outdoor adventures, one-of-a-kind cultural experiences, and Southwest spirit to spare.

There are numerous RV resorts and campgrounds near the city. Popular picks include McDowell Mountain Regional Park in nearby Fountain Hills, Twin Palms RV Park (Mesa), Apache Palms RV Park (Tempe), and Desert Shadows RV Resort (Phoenix).

Pro tips: Phoenix is congested. Maneuvering and parking a rig here can be challenging. If you don’t have a smaller vehicle, consider staying at a campground or resort that has an agreement with a rental car company. Also, reserve your place to stay well in advance. Spots fill up quickly, so plan ahead! And it probably goes without saying, but be ready for some seriously hot weather – especially if you are visiting between May and September. Average high temperatures reach up to 107 degrees in July and often soar much higher.

Play hard at the Musical Instrument MuseumWith more than 8,000 musical instruments from 200 countries, the Musical Instrument Museum is one of a kind. It is an immersive experience that allows visitors to try instruments themselves, as well as watch the experts perform. MIM is located at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd.

Visit the past and future at Heritage and Science ParkThis park is packed with some of the city’s most popular attractions. Travel back in time at historic, Victorian-style Heritage Square (113 N. Sixth St.) and tour the Rosson House. Then check out hundreds of hands-on exhibits at the Arizona Science Center (600 E. Washington St.)

Wear ’em out at the Children’s Museum of PhoenixLocated just northeast of Heritage Square at 215 N. 7th St., the Children's Museum of Phoenix offers loads of activities for younger kids. It’s similar to a giant play area! Consult a “playologist,” conquer “The Climber”, and more.

Do it all at Papago ParkAnother activity-packed area, Papago Park covers 1,500 acres across Phoenix and Tempe. In addition to hiking, biking, picnicking, and other outdoor activities, the park houses the Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo, pyramid-shaped Hunt’s Tomb, and a geological wonder known as Hole-in-the-Rock.

Heroes and history: Hall of Flame Fire Museum of FirefightingThe Hall of Flame features firefighting equipment from around the world and across eras, as well as tributes to firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty. It’s located at 6101 E. Van Buren St.

Get over the hump at Camelback MountainIf you’re ready for a strenuous hike, the 360-degree views from the summit of this camel-shaped mountain are breathtaking. There are two trails – Echo Canyon (trailhead at 4925 E. McDonald Dr.) and Cholla (6131 E. Cholla Lane in Paradise Valley). No dogs allowed.

Discover American Indian art and culture at the Heard Museum One of the city’s most memorable destinations, the Heard Museum, boasts one of the world’s top collections of American Indian art. It’s located at 2301 N. Central Ave.

Visit the home of a legend at Taliesin WestIconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright lived and taught at this stunning building for 22 years. Taliesin West is now home to the foundation and school bearing his name. Check it out at 12621 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. in Scottsdale.

Travel back in time: Pueblo Grande MuseumThe Pueblo Grand Museum and Archeological Park is an actual archeological site, with indoor and outdoor exhibits that tell the story of the Hohokam culture. It’s located at 4619 E. Washington St., near Sky Harbor Airport.

South Mountain ParkThe largest municipal part in the U.S. includes more than 25 square miles of natural beauty, the famed Mystery Castle, and much more. Check out the view from Dobbins Lookout (you can drive there if you aren’t up for the hike). South Mountain’s main entrance is at 10919 S. Central Ave.
